Know Your Flow : Why Do Periods Exist?

102

Having a period can seem like a pain in the ass (get it?), but knowing why it happens makes it easier to manage.

Sis, get your hot water bottle, cosy blanket and a sweet snack. We are breaking down why periods happen, and what products can help you manage it!

What Happens To Your Body When You Have Your Period?

Your menstrual cycle (which is the time from when one period ends to when the next one starts) happens about every 28 days or so. This monthly bleeding is controlled by your hormones.

Hormones are signals sent between your brain and body that control literally everything! Your hunger, your mood, and even sexual arousal.

Still With Me? Good!

So first, your body prepares for pregnancy by thickening the lining of your uterus (where babies are formed and grow).

Around the middle of your menstrual cycle, an egg is released from one of your ovaries. This is called ovulation. The egg travels down the fallopian tube, where it can be fertilised by sperm.

If the egg isn't fertilised, it doesn't implant in the uterine lining. As a result, your body gets rid of the thickened lining. This is released through the vagina. This is your period, chom.

Remember that every menstrual cycle is different - and that may mean we all prefer different products to manage the flow.

What Can I Use?

Yoh, babes you have a list of options to suit your lifestyle. Need something reusable? Or maybe you're always on the move and need a product that you just use once and can throw in the bin when you are done. It all exists!

Single-Use Products:

These are period products that you use and toss when done. Single-use period products make dealing with your period super convenient.

  • Disposable Pads: Pads that stick to your underwear and absorb menstrual blood. They're convenient and the most common product.

  • Tampons: These are inserted into the vagina to absorb menstrual blood. Remember, these need to be changed every four hours so that you don't get a nasty condition called Toxic Shock Syndrome!

Reusable Options:

These products are made from materials that allow for repeat wear. These are planet-friendly, cut down on waste, and can save you money (no repeat buying, just repeat wearing!) As long as you clean these properly, you can use them as many times as you like.

  • Menstrual Cups: Silicone cups that are inserted into the vagina to collect menstrual blood.

  • Reusable Cloth Pads: These are washable cloth pads that can be used multiple times. They come in fun designs.

  • Period Underwear: These are specially designed underwear that can absorb menstrual blood.

Also, pain management like hot water bottles, heating pads, and wearing some cosy socks to keep your feet warm can help with that Eina feeling!

No period-pressure, ghel. Pick what suits your style and habits best!

Lotsa love and support,
Big Sis!
