Big Sis, should I be getting any vaccines? I am considering being sexually active and want to be as healthy as possible!
Hey little sis. Gurrrl! I am proud of you for preparing your body and mind to have a safe sex life. Don’t worry sis - I’ve got the info you need.
Staying healthy means taking care of your body, and one important way to do that is by getting vaccinated.
Joh, babes, vaccines are like super shields that protect you from getting sick. Let's talk about some important vaccines that girls and young women should know about.
First up, there's the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. It is the most common STI and symptoms can include genital warts. It is a virus that can cause cervical cancer but the good news is that the HPV vaccine is a game-changer which can ensure you don’t get it in the first place. The HPV vaccine is recommended for girls and young women between 9 and 26 years old. It's given as a series of shots and works best before you become sexually active.
Next, there's the hepatitis B vaccine. Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection that can be spread through sexual contact. The vaccine is given in three doses and is recommended for all infants, as well as adults who are at risk.
There's also something called PrEP, which stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis. PrEP is a daily pill that can help prevent HIV infection, if your partner is HIV +, if taken consistently. It's an important tool in preventing HIV, especially for young women.
The Desmond Tutu Health Foundation has spoken out about the importance of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. Their work, the FastPrEP project, makes PrEP more accessible in loads of areas across South Africa. You can check out the Fast PrEP project on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok pages.
Don't be scared to chat to Big Sis for more info on any of the vaccines. Take your time and do your research on the treatments and meds you are comfortable with taking. You're doing great, gurl! Keep stepping up for yourself.
I am here for you as a guide along the way!
