Chommie, everyone gets down once in a while.
It can be a real bummer to have to keep up appearances - smile and wave while you're feeling so bad inside. Even more so when the world tells you it’s literally the season of happiness and celebration.
But, gurrrrl. I wanna spill some prime tea - there’s regular-degular sadness, which is part of the ups and downs of life, and then there’s what we call ‘seasonal depression’. That’s the super sneaky one that tends to hit for 5 or 6 months at a time, chom.
Seasonal depression, is like that uninvited guest who shows up unannounced every year, making everything feel heavy and blah. It’s not just a bad day or week—it drains your energy, making you want to hibernate, and messing with your appetite. We don’t like her.
But here’s the deal. There’s no shame in feeling this way. Loads of people deal with it and conquer this beast, even if they don’t talk about it.
So what’s the first step?
Recognising that what you’re feeling might be more than just “holiday blues.”
Chommie, most people think seasonal depression only happens in the winter months - but it can also happen in summer - especially the Mzansi festive. When everyone’s out here posting beach pics and braai vibes, it can feel like you’re the odd one out for not feeling the summer joy. Real Talk; Summer depression aka Reverse Seasonal Depression(SD), is real too, and it’s got zero chill.
Reverse SD happens when the heat, the bright light, and the long days mess with your vibe. Unlike regular SD that sneaks in during the gloomy winter months, Summer SAD rolls up during the so-called best time of the year—making it feel even worse ‘cause everyone else seems to be having the time of their lives.
Too much light: Long days can mess up your body clock, leaving you feeling off-balance.
Heat stress: Some people just don’t vibe with the heat and humidity, which can make you feel irritable, restless, and physically drained.
FOMO overload: Summer comes with a lot of social pressure—parties, trips, plans—which can feel overwhelming if you’re not in the mood.
Allergies are not cute: Pollen allergies? They’re not just for spring; they can hit you hard and leave you feeling uncomfy.
Financial stress: Holiday expenses or the pressure to keep up with social activities may also make you feel a bit under the weather.
If thoughts like, “I don’t want to be here anymore” cross your mind—please, talk to someone and get the help you need from a healthcare professional.
Maybe you’ve been feeling down for weeks, like no matter how hard you try, nothing seems to make you feel better. That’s when it might be more than just a bad day, Mo’ghel.
Maybe you’re feeling extra negative, or you are being harder on yourself, or just can’t seem to see the good in things you used to enjoy. Sjoe babes, that difficult, neh?
Some sisters also find that their appetites have changed.
Babes, if schoolwork feels impossible, or you’re pulling away from friends and family, it might be time to check in with yourself.
It’s okay to not be okay, but it’s important to get help before things spiral. Just know you’re never alone in this, and there’s always a way to feel better.
Remember, Chom, it’s okay not to be okay—even when it’s sunny. Life’s not always a summer holiday, and that’s valid.
You’re not alone in this, and Big Sis gotcha covered!
