What Keeps You Stuck And How To Get Over It

1

Hi Chomi,

On your Mental Health and Wellness journey there are always going to be two points you will always have to navigate through: what keeps you stuck and what gets you unstuck. Some things are bigger and harder than others, others are a lot less heavy and scary to navigate.

Mental Health impacts our whole lives, from our energy levels, to how well you do at school, how you show up for yourself and your friends and family – everything!

What Keeps You Stuck?

Thoughts like:

  • “I’m going to fail”
  • “I’m going to do a terrible job”
  • “I’m going to ruin it all”
  • “I’m going to be left behind” or
  • “That person is going to hate me”

All of those thoughts come from fear. The fear of not knowing what’s going to happen next. Fear takes you out of your body and into your mind, worrying, ruminating over the same loop. So how do you crush the loop?

Move Your Body

Play hopscotch. Hop about on a skipping rope. Grab a hoola hoop and start playing. Dance to your favourite song. Moving your body moves energy around the body and triggers feel good hormones in your brain - allowing you to decide on a plan of action based on optimism not fear.

Name It To Tame It

When you name what you are feeling, you hit the part of your brain that’s terrified with loadshedding and you power up the part of your brain that problem solves. That shifts your perspective from anxiety and fear to being in control and making decisions informed by logic. Um, can somebody say mega flex! Cos wow👌🏾

Speak Life: Positive Affirmations

Sometimes your mind can be your biggest cheerleader—or your toughest critic. Positive affirmations are short, powerful statements that help you shift your thoughts and build confidence.

When you say things like “I am more than my thoughts” or “Good things await me,” you’re training your brain to focus on strength instead of stress. It’s not about pretending everything is perfect—it’s about reminding yourself that you have power, purpose, and potential, even on tough days. Try starting your morning or ending your day with lines like “I will get through the day” or “I am proud of myself for making it this far.” Little by little, these words shape how you see yourself—and your world.
