What Is Consensual Sex?

21

Let’s talk about sex. It seems to be everywhere; music videos, adverts, and social media. Even if we are not thinking about sex, our body goes there anyway! We reach puberty and our bodies change, including getting our periods. It’s our body's way of saying it can make babies, even if we are not ready to.

This brings us to a very important word when it comes to sex: Consent.

You should only have sex when you want to, and when you are ready to; this is when you are able to give your consent. Sex must not be forced like your bae pressuring you into it or threatening to dump you if you don’t do it. And you can always change your mind at any point - even during! Bae needs to respect this.

“No” is an important word to use in all areas of our lives, especially when it comes to sex because sex can result in babies and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. This is why it’s important for you to be the person who decides when to have sex — or to start having sex with a new partner.

Every girl has the right to say NO and for it to be respected. What if you agree to it but start feeling uncomfortable or get nervous? It’s okay to stop. Not only is it okay, but it is also your right as well! Lastly, when you feel ready to start doing it, it’s really worth speaking to an adult you trust or even going to a clinic or pharmacy to talk to a nurse or counselor. This way, you’ll have all the information you need about how to enjoy sex safely including minimising chances of STIs.
